NEW EXTENSION
St Pauls, Dorking
Nye Saunders merged with the Brewer Jewel practice of Dorking on 2011 and one of David Jewel’s longstanding projects was to design a large two storey extension to this grade 2* listed church , to provide a meeting room complex and nursery school to replace an earlier 1970’s extension which the church had grown too big for. Design work had been undertaken for some 10 years at that time leading finally to a planning consent granted in 2011.
After the merger the combined firm developed the working drawings, specifications of work prepared, tenders sought and the work overseen with Nye Saunders administering a JCT Intermediate building contract.
The new building was designed with a mix of flint and stone facings to replicate the original church construction. Some of the flintwork being flint laid traditionally against a blockwork backing wall and some flint in less prominent positions being in off-site prefabricated flint blocks.
The extension was handed over with practical completion in September 2014.
